  • Yes, at some point I’ll get around to mentioning the GI JOE animation I scripted earlier in the year. But today I have plane-flu or summat. #
  • Listening to “Albert Camus” by Titus Andronicus: two minutes in, this is a soundtrack to invading a country as an act of romance. #

mirror, mirror on the wall...

so, it comes to my attention that we haven't had an art discussion in ages. as such, I would like to know what secrets of the art side of things are y'all curious about? do you want to know...

what we look for in a portfolio?
what decisions go into the design of a book?
what does an art director do?
who does what on the art team?

just add your questions in the comments and I will answer them as best I can on Fridays. I may even pull in a surprise guest here and there.

On Whitechapel Today

Junk currently cluttering the vestry at my internet church:

How to brand yourself with a laser printer.

A job that I haven’t announced here yet.

Kicking off the month’s self-portrait thread.

And something like a dozen threads about me at Chicago that I can’t bring myself to look at yet.

Expecto Patronum?

On my way back from the shop after buying some milk last night, I was fortunate enough to walk past a bunch of drunken morons. One of whom waited for me to reach the corner and, just as I was moving out of sight, decided to shout "Oi! Weirdo, f**k off" at me.

Being no stranger to this kind of behaviour I promptly responded with my catch-all comeback of "whatever you say chief". From past experience this either causes a string of mindless invective or, occasionally, a physical confrontation. Either of which I can take in stride because I'm more than passingly familiar with bout out comes.

What I didn't expect, however, was for the numptie to shout "'ARRY POTTOH! 'ARRY POTTOH! DISAPPEAR!"

wtf does that even mean?

Out This Month: CROOKED LITTLE VEIN In Paperback

That cover quote from the Lansing State Journal reads: "May be destined to become one of the great underground classics of the twenty-first century." I got my copies of the book today, and the first two pages are nothing but review pullquotes (they really did like that book in Canada). $13.95 in American pesos, $14.95 in Canadian mountie pelts.

The orange on the snake is much more vivid and toxic on the printed version. Once again, all props to designer Will Staehle.

Chambers of Love: The State of Creation Edition

So, as Eddy mentioned in the Monday Meeting post, I was in Columbus, OH this past week for Origins. Much fun was had, and I got to meet and talk Exalted and Scion with a lot of fans and freelancers. I took the opportunity to give people an overview of where the books they’re looking forward to are in the publishing process and a bit more about what’s going to be in The Manual of Exalted Power—The Infernals due out in 2009.

So, first off, The Roll of Glorious Divinity II is at the printers, and the logo is, in fact, spelled correctly. Brian got a printer proof Monday, and everything looks good. The Compass of Terrestrial Directions—The East is being proofed internally at White Wolf right now, and it should be heading to the printer too before the July 4th holiday. We’re waiting for a bit of the final art to come in on Scion: Ragnarök, and then, it too will be headed into layout. Another Scion Companion installment will be available soon as well, chock full of new crunchy bits for players. Graceful Wicked Masques—The Fair Folk will be out of development and into editing this week, and then I’ll be diving straight into the Scroll of Fallen Races. Initial drafts are coming in for The Compass of Terrestrial Directions—The South, and they are being redlined by Dean Shomshak, who’s co-developing that book with me. In addition to the aforementioned East layout, Brian Glass is working on an as of yet top-secret assignment that will be revealed to you guys and gals soon. And then, there’s the next fatsplat currently being written for Exalted, namely The Manual of Exalted Power—The Infernals.

Since I dished some Infernals info at Origins, I figured I’d give you folk the lowdown as well. It’s a standard Exalt-type fatsplat, with full rules for playing the Green Sun Princes. Michael Goodwin’s Charm set ideas are great, and I can’t wait to see his draft. The book also devotes a chapter to the akuma, focusing on how these fallen Chosen differ from the Green Sun Princes and also on how they operate in Creation. There is also a full chapter devoted to Helltech, which I can’t go into much detail on, but am really excited about.

Well, that’s what’s going on now with my two games. I’ll be back with a similar “State of Creation” entry in a few months, and a new Chambers of Love in two weeks. Have a great Independence Day holiday, my fellow Americans, and everyone else enjoy a terrific weekend.

Today in the Trinity Universe: we're covered in lies and that's okay

Wheels within wheels.

July 2
[Aberrant] In a Navajo Daedalus 3 communique to Agent Nyeung replying to his earlier report, Director Thetis expresses astonishment at his telling her that Max Mercer himself, not his granddaughter Margaret, conference-called on an Æon meeting, but admits that it does explain the Council's recent decisions. She advises Nyeung to observe Mercer, but not engage him directly. "We must know his degree of lucidity, what he has planned for Æon and how it will affect our efforts."

Home Again, Clickety Click

And here I am in the local pub, with a bitch of an allergy attack, watching light rain freckle the ground. Five hours’ sleep on the plane, but my vision’s already starting to fuck with me a bit. Waiting for the allergy meds to kick in, and then I’ll head home and sleep for a few hours before taking my family out to dinner.

Did I mention Andy Hurley from Fall Out Boy came by the Chicago show to hang out? What a nice guy. And, as a non-drinker, hugely amused by my progressively getting more smashed during my Friday night gig. Which was extraordinarily well attended, by the way. In lieu of a new talk — once again, no time to write one — I read from CROOKED LITTLE VEIN for the first time, and, thank God, everyone laughed in the right places. After that. it was supposed to be about an hour and forty five minutes of Q & A, taking us up to the midnight point. We overran by an hour. It’s as close to stand-up comedy as anything, and I had to laugh when Ariana said afterwards, ”you’ve got some new material, then?” Anyway, it seemed to go down pretty well. Amusing to see how often I was misquoted in the next day’s reviews.

Vision’s packing up. To bed with me.
